My Bio

David Brumagin is a surrealistic painter. Raised in a religious home, this conservative upbringing shaped the majority of David’s young life. David’s father, a schizophrenic who removed his eyes from religious delusions before his birth, developed much of the foundation for David's art style. The artists’ work is primarily a reconciliation of the fantasy of childhood with the realities of adulthood.

The essence of surrealism is that through definition one loses meaning. The lack of awareness of the intrinsic identity of each part of reality causes an incomplete observation. In this manner, the pursuit of truth is the primary vessel of the surrealistic art form and is the pursuit of undiluted information and experience.

Surrealism's goal is to identify the unique qualities of each idea, primarily the identity of the artist and the mind’s subjective observations. The goal of the artwork I display is to explain the underlying thoughts and motivations of a human mind. Each work is an observation on a subject but does not claim to be unilateral truth. The progress of mankind is limited through its acceptance of individual ‘truths’ and the subjectivist relativity of ‘truths’. Human understanding is like the Indian parable of the seven blind men and an elephant, each feeling something they know to be ‘true’ but ignoring the larger combination of data. The purpose therefore of what I create is not to present dogma for people to consume but to peel back assumptions on the ‘facts’ people accept.

Through understanding the incomplete definitions people cling to and attack from, and the flaws of egotistic centered arguments, the hope is to bring individuals into the common understanding of objectivity and observation. That truth is an unattainable goal, but worthy of pursuit. The reason such lofty ideals should be pursued yet are otherwise unattainable is the same reason one lives knowing they will die.

Purpose is not driven through an end result.

An incomplete but more fully formed picture allows a greater understanding of the world we live in. People in general, do not want the truth, they want to be right, and being ‘right’ is simply accepting a half-truth while ignoring all other information for the sake of cognitive dissonance.

Insanity is abandoning the rational realization that we all have much to learn.

The information in life is much more than we can take in, and that while the simplifications of and object’s identity help us survey the complex structures we interact with and allow daily life to take place, it should be noted that they are simplifications of reality. This rejection of existence for our own personal delusion is the center of humanities insanity.

Visual arts are based on connotation and the derived meaning of juxtaposition. Each painting then perfectly represents the concept of underlying truth in a myriad of perceived definitions. The focus of my work centers around the subjects of death, religion, and morality. The focus on death is specifically helpful because it crystallizes an inevitability people avoid thinking about but happens whether we accept it or not. The hypothesis is that objective absolute truth exists but is unknowable with certainty, that people should pursue this truth in the same way they pursue life without objective truth to its purpose.
